The young elven officers entered the brothel-temple. The door was carved with an opening rose symbol within a heart, formed in such a way as to suggest something a little less innocent. Heady incense permeated the receiving room. Soft music played somewhere and everything was draped with silks and illuminated with a surplus of candlelight.

A voluptuous human woman asked Molly, “Is everything all right?” She had dark, curly hair, and she was dressed only in a red negligee and stockings.

“These young elves got into a bit of a scrape with Lars the Dark and his cronies,” she said. “They’ll need baths and some healing. This is Sally.”

Sally’s mouth pressed into a hard line. She came over to them and put her hand on the side of Garan’s face. He winced. She nodded. “I’ll get some witch hazel,” she said, and disappeared into a back room.

“Come on,” said Molly, “I’ll run you some baths.” She led them into a gilded bathing area, where several large tubs were waiting. Shaundar stood to the side, where oil was not likely to drip on their nice silks, and concentrated on breathing.

“Nice going with the greasing spell,” Yathar said to Shaundar.

“You know, I don’t even know why I thought about that one, since we’re on shore leave,” Shaundar said with a shrug he immediately regretted. “It’s fortunate I hit that barrel. I don’t think I even have any butter or anything.”

If he hadn’t had an oily substance close to hand, he would not have been able to create the slippery field. Magic required more of one thing to create another, or it required a similar energy source to create energy.

“I’m sure you do,” Sylria argued. “You’re usually prepared.”

Shaundar appreciated the compliment. “Maybe buried in the bottom of my spell pouches.”

“The lightning bolt is what turned the tide,” Tyelatae reminded them. “Nice going, Narissa!”

“Yeah, good job, love,” Shaundar agreed, giving her a kiss.

Her lips trembled against his. She was shaking and pale as she put the wand away. “I don’t know; I was just angry.”

Sally came back with some tincture. “Here, hold still,” she told Garan and wiped it on his bruises. Then she made a noise of disapproval. “That’s swelling badly. How’s your breathing?”

“Rough,” he admitted.

“Right, then. Ghostmoss it is.” She disappeared again.

Molly, in the meantime, was drawing baths. Steaming hot water streamed from brass taps into three tubs—a marvel of gnomish engineering. “That’s all the baths we have at once, so you might have to share.” She winked.

Tyelatae cast a wicked grin in Yathar’s direction. “Help me undress, marine?”

He grinned. “May we borrow a chair?”

“Sure hon, just grab one.” She indicated a couple of high-backed wooden chairs lined up along a wall of the bathroom.

He brought one of them over to the side of a tub and sat Tyelatae in it to help her with her uniform. She propped herself up on a crutch to remove her trousers, then sat back down again. Shaundar could see that the stump of her leg had been magically healed and there was no visible wound, aside from the fact that it was gone.
